Moving-In Expectations As a new tenant, there are certain items and conditions that you should expect from your landlord and the condition of your new abode. As you perform your condition inspection you are within your rights to request a minimum standard of cleanliness and operational.
These items include the following: - Clean carpets in a reasonable state of repair
- The locks changed since the last tenants have vacated the property
- One set of keys for each lock
- Windows and window coverings ( if applicable) clean and in good working condition
- Light bulbs in every socket
- All mechanical systems in good working order
The landlord should also provide you with contact numbers in case of emergency, rules and regulations concerning the rental unit (these should also be spelled out in the tenancy agreement), and community regulations. (Parking permits for example) You should also be aware that these items that you should expect are also expected by the landlord at the end of the tenancy. There are many issues that you need to take care of when you move to a new residence. These items include: - Change of address forms (you can do this online at the Canada Post)
- Start (or transfer) all utilities that you are responsible for according to your lease
- Change Home Insurance for Renters
- Notify Driver's license, Revenue agency, and Canada Custom of new address
Don't forget to notify your previous landlord of your new address, or you will forfeit any right to receiving your security deposit back. |
